Drug Uses

Effexor is prescribed to treat panic and anxiety disorders, as well as major depression.

How Taken

Effexor comes in capsule form and taken orally. The usual dose is two or three times a day as prescribed by a doctor. Effexor should be taken with food. Do not chew, crush or break the capsule. Do not dissolve the capsule in water. The capsule should be swallowed with liquid. You may carefully open the capsule and sprinkle the contents into a spoonful of sauce. Swallow this mixture without chewing, and drink a glass of water afterwards.

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.

More Information

While using Effexor, be careful when driving, operating machinery or doing other potentially dangerous activities. Avoid such activities if you experience dizziness or drowsiness and consult your doctor if the symptoms persist or worsen. When alcohol is taken simultaneously with Effexor it can increase dizziness and/or drowsiness. Never increase or decrease the dosage without first consulting your doctor. The sudden cessation of Effexor can cause a variety of side-effects. Your doctor will gradually lower the dosage until it is safe for you to stop the medication.

These include herbal and over-the-counter medications. If you are using MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors), you should not take Effexor. Patients taking Effexor should be closely observed, particularly in the early stages of dosage, or if the dosage is altered.
